What is VSME?

It's a sustainability reporting standard designed specifically for small and medium-sized enterprises that are not in scope of the mandatory CSRD regime. VSME aligns with the same ESRS topical structure as the mandatory standards but with simplified, proportionate disclosure expectations across two modules: Basic and Comprehensive.

Who needs to do a VSME materiality assessment?

Any SME (typically micro: 1-9 staff, small: 10-49 staff, medium: 50-249 staff) that wants to publish a credible sustainability report or respond consistently to ESG questionnaires from larger customers, lenders, or investors. VSME is voluntary, but increasingly large customers in scope of CSRD pass ESG questionnaires down to their SME suppliers - and a documented materiality assessment is often the first thing they ask for.

What is double materiality?

Double materiality is a core concept in EU sustainability reporting (ESRS, CSRD, and now VSME). A topic is material if EITHER (a) your business has a significant impact on the environment, society, or governance under that topic - impact materiality - OR (b) the topic has a significant effect on your financial position, performance, or cash flows - financial materiality. VSME asks you to assess both directions for every ESRS topic.

What's the difference between EFRAG and ESRS?

EFRAG is the body that drafts EU sustainability reporting standards. ESRS (European Sustainability Reporting Standards) is the suite of standards EFRAG produces - there are mandatory ESRS for in-scope CSRD companies, and the voluntary VSME standard for SMEs. So ESRS is the standard, EFRAG is the standard-setter. VSME borrows the same topical taxonomy as the mandatory ESRS (E1-E5, S1-S4, G1) but applies a lighter-touch disclosure expectation.
